The Law of Thirds
Pricing Legal Services

Obviously, attorneys are in the business of delivering legal services for MONEY.

So are PARALEGALS.

Its what we all do, each in our own way.

In our education, one of the things that is often learned is a basic guideline (I stress the word BASIC) about charging for services.  Its a very simple guideline, and its called THE LAW OF THIRDS.

The Law of Thirds, as applied to the legal profession, means that the fee per hour that an attorney charges for work performed is broken down to 1/3 for the actual DOING of the work - and 2/3 for "other" things.

Admittedly, for such things as business expenses - running a business of any kind costs MONEY.  No way around that.

BUT, also for PROFIT.

NOW: this means, just by way of example, that if an attorney charges $250 an hour for his time (not an uncommon rate) according to this law, that is going to break down THIS WAY:

  • Approximately $83.34 will go to the actual HANDLING of your case - the actual LEGAL WORK on your case; while
  • $166.66 will go for "other things".

NOW - HERE'S WHERE THIS GETS INTERESTING... for YOU - the CONSUMER of LEGAL SERVICES:

Do you think that this means that the parelegals handling your case are actually getting $83.34 per hour to handle your case?

WRONG!

In the VAST MAJORITY of the cases, they're making FAR LESS than that.

So where's all that other money that you're spending for your legal services GOING?

(I'M NOT ACTUALLY GOING TO TELL YOU - I HAVE FAITH IN YOU - I THINK YOU CAN FIGURE THIS ONE OUT FOR YOURSELF)

Knowing what you now know: do you want to PAY MORE for your legal services?  Or LESS?

If you said "LESS" then the services of a paralegal are WHAT YOU WANT!

So, READ ON, oh ye seeker of quality legal services at lower prices!
